Type Locality and Naming

Along the Shurabsay river, Karjantau ridge. N. P. Vasilkovsky, 1952 (131, p. 153). The stratotype proposed by N.P. Vasilkovsky for this suite along the Shurabsay river is the stratotype of the Karjantau suite, so the Chadak river basin section is proposed as a hypostatotype.

Synonym: Shurabsay Suite, Шурабсайская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Lavas and tuffs of trachyandesites, trachyandesibasalts, trachybasalts, andesites, trachytes. At the base, conglomerates, sandstones, siltstone (aleurolites) with lenses of limestones. Thickness 200-900m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It lies unconformably on the Minbulak Fm, Oyasa Fm, Nadak Fm, Akchin Fm, and Kaensuy Fm

Upper contact

It is unconformably overlain by the Kyzylnurin Fm

Regional extent

Chatkal ridge, Tekeli river, Ravash city; Kuramin ridge, rivers Chadak, Jula, Kumlay, Kamchik, Gava. The volume of the Sh. suite is interpreted ambiguously, some include the Ravash Fm in it.

Fossils

Contains plant remains - Odontopteris ex gr. dufrenoyi Brongn., Callipteris polymorpha Weiss, C. aff. raymondi Zeill., C. nicklesii Zeill., Ginkgophyllum ex gr. grassetii Saporta., Ullmannia sp. and others, corresponding to the Sakmarian stage.

It is attributed to the Sakmarian stage of the Lower Permian.
